The Nuans Search Process

How to order

To order a NUANS report, you should have a CC (Visa/Mastercard) & 3 prospective names for your business. When you click on the ORDER NUANS REPORT link, you can fill out the form, your CC will get charged & your information will be sent securely to our office. A NUANS specialist will then do a pre-search on your proposed name.

What is a pre-search?

A pre-search is a free service we offer in order to save you money. The NUANS databank provides monthly snapshots of the registered names which we can access in order to eliminate a proposed name without running a full search. This pre-search is not as valuable as the full search as it only looks for an exact match ( not derivations) & only looks at names that have been registered up to the previous month - if you are proposing in May, we can search up to & including April.

We ask that you propose 3 business names. If the pre-search turns up a conflict, then you have not wasted money on a needless search. We then run the pre-search on your 2nd choice & so on until there is no pre-search conflict.

What is a full search?

If a pre-search is successful - no conflict - we then submit the full search. The full search is done on up to the minute data - your proposed name is compared with all registered names up to the second the search is done. The search looks at several criteria in order to produce a listing of names which may conflict with yours. This list is then evaluated by knowledgeable staff & an opinion is rendered as to whether the name is acceptable or not.

What documents do you get?

Along with a cover letter indicating our opinion on the proposed name's use, the results of the NUANS namesearch are emailed to you within hours .

99% of names proposed are accepted because the pre-search catches most conflicts. If the search turns up no conflicting names, your proposed name is then reserved for 90 days. You must submit the NUANS report along with your provincial/federal registration documents within 90 days or your reservation will expire.

In the case where the NUANS search does find a conflicting name, you will need to select another set of names & restart the process. As NUANS searches are on a pay-per-search basis, search houses (including us) do not refund the cost of failed namesearches. Luckily, most NUANS searches are successful & result in the reservation of the name for 90 days.
